    Description

Judaea. Yehud. Ca. 400-333 B.C. AR hemiobol (7 mm, 0.47 g, 7 h). Head of Athena right, wearing Attic helmet reduced to olive wreath decoration (partly off flan) / Owl standing right, head facing; in upper left field, lily; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "YHD". TJC 6 (same dies); AJC I, 4SR (same dies); Hendin 426. Toned VF. Rare.

The widely recognized Athenian owl type was often imitated in the ancient Near East and elsewhere as a means of giving local currencies the air of international legitimacy enjoyed by Athenian coinage. However it is interesting that the engraver of this Yehud issue has consciously replaced the usual olive sprig and crescent found on the Athenian prototype with a lily, the emblem of Jerusalem since the Biblical period. It has been determined recently that the incuse impressions on the obverse type are the results of die clashing (see J.-P. Fontanille, "Extreme Deterioration and Damage on Yehud Coin Dies," INR 3 [2008], pp. 39-41). The marks represent the head of the owl on the reverse die.
