Description

Judaea. Yehud. Ca. 350-333 B.C. AR hemiobol (7 mm, 0.52 g, 7 h). Crude head of Athena right, wearing Attic helmet / Owl standing right, head facing; in upper left field, olive sprig and crescent; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "YHD". TJC 4 (same dies); AJC I, 2; Hendin 426. Toned VF.

This coin illustrates the propensity of the Yehud mint to produce coins with the same die pairs until they became completely unusable. What appears to be a beard on the obverse portrait is in fact damage to the die from extended use. An very nice example of a later die state not included in Jean-Philippe Fontanille's sequence of die degradation in INR 3 (2008), p. 31.
