    Description

Roman Judaea, Countermarked series. Mid-late 1st century A.D. AE 22 mm (15.22 g). Uncertain host coin with four c/ms: head right within circular incuse; L. XII within rectangular incuse; L. X. F. above boar and dolphin within rectangular incuse; and galley sailing right within rectangular incuse. Hendin 807a, 806a, and 802 (for the last two countermarks). C/ms Fair to Fine, brown patina.

The countermarks were applied by Legio X Fretensis and Legio XII Fulminata, both of which fought against the Jewish rebels during the First Revolt. These two legions participated in the storming of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, and after the war Legio X was used to garrison the desolate province of Judaea. Legio XII was transferred to Melitene in Cappadocia. Because of the early transfer of Legio XII it seems likely that the countermark of this legion was applied during or very shortly after the Jewish War.
