    SASANIAN KINGDOM. Khusrau II, First Reign (AD 590-591). AR drachm (31mm, 4.12 gm, 3h). Choice AU. Mint ShY (possibly Shiraz), Regnal Year 1 (AD 590/1). Crowned bust of Khusrau right wearing first, wingless, crown; crescent and fillet at each shoulder / Fire altar between attendants; star to left and crescent to right of flames; design surrounded by three circles with crescent only at 3, 6, 9, 12h. Scarce. Göbl I/1.

    This scarce type was struck only in years 1 and 2 of Khusrau's reign. He had to flee to the Byzantine Empire when Varhran Chubin usurped the throne as Varhran VI and was restored to his throne in AD 591 with the assistance of Byzantine troops. After his restoration, he wore a crown surmounted with the wings of the god of victory, Verethragna, for the rest of his reign.
