    Description

SASANIAN KINGDOM. Shahpur (Sabuhr) II (AD 309-379). AV dinar (22mm, 3h). ANACS EF 40. Mint IV ("Western mint"), ca. AD 309-320. Bust of Shapur II right, wearing mural crown with korymbos / Large flaming fire altar with ribbon flanked by two attendants turned inward with raised sword in both hands, each wearing mural crowns with korymbos, ribbon and bucranium symbols flanking flames, pseudo-legends at sides. cf. Sunrise 833 (symbols in opposite positions). Göbl 94.

The longest-reigning of all Sasanian kings, Shapur II was crowned while still in the womb (courtiers supposedly placed the crown upon his mother's belly) and held power for seven decades. His reign was chiefly occupied by a 30-year war with the Romans that ended with Persia reclaiming all off the lands lost in previous conflicts, and then some. In the east, he pushed the frontier to the border of China and secured his empire through favorable relations with the Hunnic tribes. His long reign rightly can be seen as the Sasanian "Golden Age."

    Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
