Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus became one the first senior co-emperors along with Diocletian during the original Tetrarchy. Maximian's first reign would remain somewhat steady, reinforcing Rome's northern borders against Germanic tribes and upstart Gallic rebels, however, would fail to suppress his former corrupt general, Carausius who would create a splinter state in Britannia and northern Gaul. Maximian would ultimately be outshone by his subordinate, junior emperor, Constantius I who would successfully end the splinter state and gain the title of senior emperor upon Maximian's abdication in AD 305. Maximian would claim his abandoned title however in AD 306 to aid his son, Maxentius against Constantine, he would however, attempt to depose his own son and join Constantine, before betraying the latter as well, resulting in his death by suicide.
