    Description

    Rare Constantinian Fraction

Anonymous. Time of Constantine I the Great (AD 307-337). AR third siliqua or scripulum (11mm, 0.81 gm, 7h). Constantinople, foundation issue, circa AD 330. Pearl-diademed and draped bust of Constantinopolis (resembling Helena) right / Large K within beaded border. Cohen 287 (Constantine II). Bastien, Donativa, 80, 3. Rare in this grade. NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5, deposits.

From The Lexington Collection of Jonathan K. Kern.

This rare and intriguing issue was likely struck for the ceremonies commemorating the official foundation of Constantinople on 11 May, AD 330. Like the "Maundy money" struck in England for special occasions, it was likely handed out to the general populace as part of the celebration. Earliest examples bear portraits which resemble members of the Constantinian dynasty as represented on other coinage, mainly Helena, Constantine's mother. Similar coins were seemingly issued at 100-year intervals until the reign of Justinian I the Great (AD 527-565).
