Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161). Æ as (13.44 gm). Rome, AD 140-144. Very rare, an evocative (and erotic) reverse recalling the origins of Rome. Smooth brown patina. NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style.

In Roman mythology, Rhea Silva was the daughter of Numitor, king of Alba Longa. Although a Vestal Virgin, she became pregnant and claimed it was via a nocturnal visit by the god Mars, the scene depicted on the reverse of this copper as issued in anticipation of Rome's 900th anniversary. The twins Romulus and Remus were born of the divine union.
