    Description

Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161). Æ as (24.5mm, 9.23 gm, 12h).  Rome (or Britannia), AD 155. [ANTONINVS AV]G PIVS P M TR P XVIII, laureate head of Antoninus right / BRITANNIA COS III, Britannia seated left on rock in attitude of mourning, large oval shield and vexillum behind, SC in exergue. RIC 934. Cohen 1117. Scarce. Brown patina. Obverse a bit weakly struck and rough, but a fine early representation of Britannia. Very Fine / Good very fine.

Although mainly peaceful, the reign of Antoninus Pius did witness extensive military action in Britain. Shortly after his accession Antoninus sent the experienced Q. Lollius Urbicus along with reinforcements to Britannia to quell unrest in the north. This task completed, Urbicus advanced the Roman frontier from Hadrian's wall about 70 miles northward and built a new fortification, the Antonine Wall, to mark the limits of the Empire. Antoninus was saluted as Imperator II on the occasion and female personification of Britannia was featured prominently on his coinage. Copper asses of this type, featuring Britannia on the reverse, are frequently found in Britain but only rarely on the continent, suggesting that they may have been struck in Britain (likely from dies engraved in Rome) for local distribution.
