Description
Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. AE dupondius (24 mm, 9.89 g, 12'). British issue. Possibly a provincial mint in Britain, or else Rome, A.D. 154/5. Laureate head right / Britannia seated left on rock, resting head on hand; arms in background. RIC 934; BMC 1972; Cohen 117. VF, dark brown patina, small flan, porous. The crude fabric and manufacture of the BRITANNIA ases of Antoninus Pius, as well as the fact that all known finds spots are in Britain, has lead some scholars to suggest that they were minted there. D. R. Walker, The Temple of Sulis Minerva at Bath: Vol. 2. The Finds from the Sacred Spring, pp. 295-6, refers to the coins as "British associated" but does not go as far as declaring a provincial manufacture.Auction Info
