    Description

Claudius (AD 41-54). Æ imitative sestertius (31mm, 17.74 gm, 6h). Irregular British or Gallic mint, mid 1st century AD. Laureate head of Claudius right, rectangular AVG countermark on neck / Spes walking left, lifting hem and holding flower. Cf. RIC 99 and 115 (Rome). Glossy dark green patina, smoothed in fields. NGC XF 4/5 - 2/5, smoothing.

The unmet demand for "small change" in the Roman Empire's burgeoning provinces led to the creation of "unofficial mints," which supplied bronze coinage patterned on official Roman designs for the local economy. Roman authorities gave this practice a literal "stamp of authority" by countermarking these coins as legal tender, although usually at a lower denomination.
