    Description

Claudius I (AD 41-54). AR/Æ fourrée denarius (20mm, 2.90 gm, 1h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 3/5, core visible. British imitation of Rome mint issue of AD 49-50. TI CLΛVD CΛESΛR ΛVG P M TR P VII IMP P P, laureate head right / S P Q R  P • P OB C S in three lines within oak wreath. North Suffolk 77. Cf. RIC I 49. Very rare! Tiny peripheral breaks in plating reveal copper core, otherwise giving every appearance of an exemplary Claudius denarius.

This silver-plated denarius was likely produced at an "unofficial" mint in Britain somewhat after the Claudian invasion of AD 43. The sudden arrival of tens of thousands of Romans in the new-won province produced a soaring demand for coinage that was answered on the local level by the striking of bronze sestertii and copper asses, as well as plated denarii of this type. While not sanctioned by the Roman government, the practice was likely "winked at" by the authorities until greater stores of specie were imported. A hoard of 110 plated denarii of this type was found in Waveny, Suffolk in 1996.
