    Rare Reverse Type

Commodus (AD 177-192). AV aureus (21mm, 7.30 gm, 6h).  Rome, AD 189. M COMM • ANT • P FEL • AVG • BRIT, laureate, draped bust of Commodus right / FORTVNAE • DVCI, Fortuna standing left, holding tiller in right hand and cradling cornucopia in left arm. RIC --. BMCRE --. Cohen --. Calicó 2253. Very rare! Struck on a broad flan. NGC (photo-certificate) XF 5/5 - 3/5.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Stack's (New York, 3-4 December 1996), lot 333.

A particularly rare reverse type for Commodus, with no specimens having been recorded before one appeared in Leu X (1974). Since then three or four additional coins (including this one) have come to light. The type is also puzzling in that the legend FORTVNA REDVCI is usually employed by emperors returning from a long journey, often overseas. After returning to Rome from the German frontier at the outset of his reign, however, Commodus is not known to have taken any journeys longer than an excursion to the pleasure villas in the environs of Rome.

All Roman gold coins from the Dimitriadis Collection have been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. These may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. Please e-mail if you would like to utilize this option.
