    Description

    Constantinople Mint

Constantius II (AD 337-361). AV solidus (21mm, 4.38 gm, 11h). Constantinople, second officina, AD 347-355. FL IVL CONSTAN-TIVS PERP AVG, pearl and rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / GLORIA REI-PVBLICAE, Roma seated facing and Constantinopolis seated half-left, foot on prow, each holding scepter, supporting shield between them inscribed VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX in four lines; CONS in exergue. RIC 57. Depeyrot 2/3. Very rare issue for the Constantinople mint! Also, an exceptionally clean and attractive specimen. NGC Choice AU? 5/5 - 4/5.

Although this type was struck in considerable numbers at the Antioch mint, an issue from which numerous examples survive, comparatively few were struck at Constantinople. A survey of auction records reveals only four examples have sold over a period about 15 years.
