    Description

Constantius II (AD 337-361). AV solidus (4.39 gm) Antioch, AD 337. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius to right / Victory advancing left, holding trophy with her right hand and palm frond with her left, LXXII in lower right filed, SMAN· in exergue. RIC 103. Depeyrot 50/2. Extremely rare! Edge marks, surface dig and somewhat wavy flan indicating jewelry mounting, otherwise Good Very Fine.

This rare variety is one of the first coins struck at the Antioch mint of Constantius II as Augustus. Of interest is the laurel wreath he wears instead of the diadem adopted by his father Constantine; upon the passing of a period of mourning, all the co-rulers resumed using the diadem. Also, the numeral 72 in the lower right reverse field apparently refers to the theoretical weight of a gold solidus as being 1/72nd of a Roman pound.
