    Breathtaking Crispus Solidus

Crispus (AD 316-326). AV solidus (20mm, 4.45 gm, 6h). NGC MS★ 5/5 - 4/5. Nicomedia, 1st officina, AD 324-325. FL IVL CRIS-PVS NOB CAES, heroically nude laureate bust of Crispus left, seen from behind, balteus over right shoulder, shield in left hand, transverse spear forward in right / VIRTVS-CAESARI N, Crispus charging on horseback right, shield in left hand, about to spear with right hand enemy kneeling left before horse, who has thrown away his shield or is offering it to Crispus; a second enemy lies left on the ground under the horse, extending his left arm; SMNP in exergue. RIC VII 84-85 var. (exergual mark) Cohen 164 var. (same). Depeyrot p. 128, 35/6 var. (same). RIC and Depeyrot list only SMNK and Γ, with Depeyrot also adding M. Only one other example known with SMNP in exergue (Gemini II, 11 January 2006, lot 516; Hess-Leu 36, 1968, 558). All specimens show the apparent dative in reverse legend, CAESARI, which seems grammatically incorrect. One would expect the genitive case, CAESARIS, for "The Valor of Our Caesar". Absolutely stunning coin in hand, struck from exceptionally detailed dies on flashy, lustrous surfaces.
