Description

Domitian. A.D. 81-96. AE sestertius (35 mm, 23.47 g, 7'). Rome, A.D. 85. Laureate bust right, with aegis / GERMANIA CAPTA, Trophy between Germania seated in attitude of mourning on left and German captive standing with hands bound behind him on right. RIC 274; BMC 294; Cohen -. VF, brown patina, minor flan flaws. Domitian pursued a wise policy of shortening Rome's frontier in Germany and Dacia to stem the flow of barbarian incursions which were becoming increasingly more troublesome. However, probably more because of his personal mismanagement than any incompetence among his generals, Domitian was unable to succeed in his designs, and when he was assassinated in 96 he left the Empire in a state of near bankruptcy and militarily exhausted. Thus, this interesting type, celebrating Rome's conquest over Germania, was premature. It was only due to the stringent fiscal policy of Nerva and Trajan's formidable military might that Rome recovered from Domitian's ruinous campaigns.
