    Gaius 'Caligula' (AD 37-41). Orichalcum sestertius (26.20 gm). Rome, AD 37/8. C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS P M TR POT, PIETAS in exergue, Pietas seated left, holding patera resting elbow on small figure standing facing on basis / DIVO AVG/S C in two lines across field, Emperor standing left, sacrificing out of patera over garlanded altar; on left, victimarius standing right, steadying bull for sacrifice; on right, attendant standing left; in background, hexastyle temple of Divus Augustus hung with garland. RIC 36. BMC 41. Cohen 9. Two-toned tan and reddish brown patina. A pleasing very fine.

    This coin commemorates the dedication of the temple of the Divus Augustus in AD 37 and depicts Gaius Caligula officiating as pontifex maximus. This dedication was important to Caligula as it emphasized his connection to Augustus and served to lend an air of legitimacy to his troubled reign. Caligula celebrated the dedication in an elaborate fashion with a 2-day horse race and wild beast shows that saw the slaughter of 400 bears and the same number of exotic animals brought from Africa. For the celebration all lawsuits and mourning were suspended so that the entire population of Rome could take part.
