    Superb Galba Portrait

Galba (AD 68-69). AR denarius (3.45 gm). Rome, April AD 68 - January AD 69. IMP SER GALBA AVG, bare head of Galba right / S P Q R / OB/ C S in three lines within oak wreath. RIC 167. RSC 287. Attractively toned and possessing a magnificent portrait. Choice extremely fine.

From the CK Collection (Triton XIV, 4 January 2011). Ex CNG 60 (22 May 2002), 1551.

A wizened old aristocrat, Galba's stern, sunken features stood in stark contrast to those of his predecessor, the overweight dilettante Nero. Although his reign lasted scarcely six months, Galba's rough looks inspired the Roman mint produced some of the most powerful, character-filled coin portraits in numismatic history, including the one on this denarius.
