    Description

Hanniballianus, as Rex Regum (AD 335-337). AE 3/4 or BI nummus (17mm, 1.24 gm, 6h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5. Constantinople, 6th officina, AD 336-337. FL HANNIBALLIANO REGI, bare headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Hanniballianus right, seen from front / SE-CVRITAS PVBLICA, Euphrates reclining right on ground, leaning on scepter in right hand, urn at side, reed in background; CONSS in exergue. RIC VII 147.

Coins of Hanniballianus, nephew of Constantine I the Great, were struck only at Constantinople and remain the only pieces struck to give the title "king" (REGI) to a Roman ruler. The reverse type, a reclining personification of the River Euphrates, supports the view that Constantine's eventual aim was to invade the Sasanian Persian Kingdom and install Hanniballianus at its head, thus ending the centuries-old conflict between East and West.
