    Full Mint Bloom

Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180). AV aureus (19mm, 7.21 gm, 12h). Rome, AD 175. M ANTONINVS AVG - GERM TR P XXIX, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust of Marcus right / LIBERAL · AVG · VI · IMP · VII COS III Liberalitas standing left, holding coin scoop and cornucopia. RIC 319. BMCRE 620, pl. 65.13 (same obverse die). Calicó 1881 (same dies). A lovely aureus in a superb state of preservation, perfectly struck and displaying full "mint bloom." NGC Choice MS 5/5 - 5/5.

This aureus commemorates the sixth cash distribution made during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, a largesse precipitated by the revolt of Avidius Cassius in Syria in spring AD 175. The news sent shock waves throughout the Empire, forcing Marcus to take steps to shore up his regime, including distributing cash to the citizenry (despite the austerity imposed by over a decade of near-continuous warfare), having Commodus assume the toga virilis, and clearly marking him out as heir to the throne.
