    Description

Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180). AV aureus (7.37 gm). Rome, AD 177/8. M . AVREL . ANTO-NINVS . AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius right / TR P XXXII . IMP VIIII COS III P P, Annona standing facing, head left, holding two grain ears over modius and cornucopiae; to right, ship's prow. RIC 389. Calic├│ 2019 (same obv. die as illustration). BMC 771. Cohen -. Great strike and perfectly centered, fields lustrous. Choice extremely fine.

The reverse of this impressive gold coin indicates the great concern that the Roman emperors had for maintaining the imported grain supply (annona) for Rome. Without it, many of the urban plebs would starve and dangerous riots would ensue, thereby threatening the stability of the Roman imperial capital. It is not for nothing that the poet Juvenal described "bread and circuses" as the two major concerns of the citizens of Rome.
