    Description

    House of Hercules

Maximian, first reign (AD 286-305). AV aureus (19mm, 5.17 gm, 6h).  Trier, AD 293-294. MAXIMIA-NVS P AVG, laureate head of Maximian right / HERCVLI VICTORI, Hercules seated facing, head right, on pile of rocks, hands crossed on lap; lion-skin draped over right leg; club resting against left knee; quiver and bow against right; in exergue, P T. RIC VI 13. Cohen --, cf. 305 (obverse legend ends P F AVG). Calic├│ 4683 (R3). An exceedingly rare variant. NGC (photo-certificate) XF 5/5 - 1/5, repaired.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Dreesmann Collection (Spink London, 13 April 2000), lot 76; Lanz 34 (Munich, 25 November 1985).

As part of the image associated with the Tetrarchy, Diocletian adopted Jupiter as his patron deity and thus formed the "Jovian" house of rulers, while Maximian adopted Hercules and thus became head of the "Herculean" house. The arrangement survived into the Second Tetrarchy, with Galerius and Constantius heading up the respective branches, but was soon forgotten after Constantine's rise to power.

All Roman gold coins from the Dimitriadis Collection have been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. These may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. Please e-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
