Description

Nero. A.D. 54-68. AE as (28 mm, 11.21 g, 6 h). Rome, ca. A.D. 65. Laureate bust of Nero right / Temple of Janus with closed doors. RIC 306; BMC 227; BN 400-2; Cohen 171. VF, green patina.

The reverse celebrates Nero's ostentatious closure of the doors of the Temple of Janus to signify a return of peace to the Empire. Ironically only a few years later the Jewish Revolt broke out and Nero's regime devolved into the chaos of the Year of the Four Emperors (A.D. 69).
