    Description

Roman (ca. AD 50-150). Two bronze figures of an athlete and Harpocrates.   Larger figure, 62mm tall, depicts a nude athlete in an action pose, legs bent and arms extended downward, hands flat; he is either a wrestler holding his opponent down, looking back to the referee, or he is a relay runner posted to start, looking back at his approaching teammate. Nicely modeled and displaying a firm grasp for anatomical detail. With custom stand. Good Very Fine.

The smaller figure, 51mm tall, depicts the Greco-Egyptian god as a nude youth wearing a Phrygian cap. seated with one leg extended, raising his right hand and extending a finger. Green patina of varying shades. Good Very Fine overall. On a small lucite base.

Harpocrates, the son of Isis and Horus, is often described as a "god of silence" as he is often shown raising a finger to his lips. The Egyptians referred to him as "Horus the child" and, although the original meaning of the finger-to-lips gesture is obscure, during the Ptolemaic era the Greeks interpreted it as meaning silence. He was thought to be the protector of pregnant women and children. This charming small figurine depicts him in a variant pose, raising his finger as if to call for attention.
