Septimius Severus and Caracalla (AD 193-211). AR denarius (3.55 gm). Rome, AD 201. SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head of Septimius Severus right / [AETERN]IT IMPERI, confronted busts of Septimius Severus, on the left, and Caracalla, on the right, both laureate and draped. RIC 250. BMC 307. RSC 1. Rare. Nearly extremely fine.Beginning after AD 198, Roman imperial and provincial coinages begin to employ dynastic types advertising both the emperor and his immediate family. In this year, Septimius Severus elevated his eldest son, Caracalla, to the status of Augustus and his younger son, Geta, to that of Caesar. The dynastic types were meant to publicize the stability of the Severan imperial house and the successful end of several years of civil strife. Yet, in a sense it was merely a charade. When Severus died leaving his sons as co-rulers, it was not long at all before Caracalla murdered his brother so that he could rule alone.
