    Description

    Lovely Miliarense

Theodosius II, Eastern Roman Emperor (AD 402-450). AR light miliarense (24mm, 4.26 gm, 12h). Constantinople, AD 408-420. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Theodosius facing, head left / GLORIA ROMANORVM, Theodosius, in military dress, nimbate, standing facing, head left, raising right hand and holding globe in left, star to left, CON in exergue. RIC X 370. MIRB 61a. RSC 20a. Rare! A lovely example, crisply struck and nicely toned. NGC Choice AU? 5/5 - 5/5.

Despite his civilian nature, the reverse of this beautiful silver miliarense depicts Theodosius II as a general in full armor, holding a globe symbolizing world rule. While stylized, the obverse portrait is carefully executed and perhaps conveys some of the emperor's mildness and reticence.
