    Description

    Struck Under Johannes

Theodosius II, Eastern Roman Emperor (AD 402-450). AV solidus (22mm, 4.48 g, 1h).  Ravenna, under Johannes, AD 423-425. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Theodosius right / VICTORI-A AVGGG R-V, Theodosius standing right, left foot on bound captive, holding labarum in right hand, Victory set on globe in left, COMOB in exergue. RIC X 1329. Depeyrot 7/2. DOCLR 349. Rare Western-mint issue (and profile portrait) for an Eastern Emperor! NGC AU 4/5 - 5/5.

From The Lexington Collection of Jonathan K. Kern.

In contrast to the plentiful solidi of the long-reigning Theodosius II from Eastern mints, Western solidi of this ruler are quite rare. This reverse of this piece is also die-linked to a solidus of the usurper Johannes (AD 423-425), indicating he briefly sought recognition from Constantinople before relations deteriorated to open warfare.
