    Unlisted And Recut Reverse

Theodosius II, Eastern Roman Empire (AD 402-450). AV solidus (22mm, 4.40 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5. Constantinople, January-October AD 425. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, cuirassed bust facing slightly right, spear in right hand over shoulder, shield decorated with horseman motif on left arm / SALVS REI-PVBLICA-E, Theodosius II seated facing and Valentinian III standing, wearing consular robes, mappa in right hand, cruciform scepter in left; star above, CONOB in exergue. RIC X -, cf. 233-6.

The celator began cutting the reverse legend after SALVS with some other legend, realized the error and recut the first three letters, removing the fourth and leaving a pit in the die, causing the bump by the head of the emperor. Additionally, the known legend breaks on the reverse after the I-P are none, B-L, L-I and I-C. This example with A-E is not in RIC.
