    Incredible Shrinking Aureus

Trajan Decius (AD 249-251). AV aureus (18mm, 3.75 gm, 6h).  Rome,  AD 250-251. IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, laureate and cuirassed bust of Decius right / GENIVS EXERC ILLYRICIANI, Genius of the Illyrian Armies standing left, holding patera in right hand and cornucopia cradles in left arm, military signa to right. RIC --, cf. 16 (bust also draped). Cohen 48.  Calic├│ 3290. NGC (photo-certificate) NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 2/5, wavy flan.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Dreesmann Collection, Part I (Spink London, 13 April 2000), lot 34; Lanz 40 (Munich, 25 May 1987), lot 795.

The perilous economic situation of the Roman Empire during the Third Century Crisis is illustrated by the diminished weight of the venerable gold aureus. This example weighs in at 3.75 grams; only a generation earlier, the aureus weighed twice as much. The silver coinage had undergone a similar debasement, which would continue to worsen until the reforms of Diocletian in the early 290s.

All Roman gold coins from the Dimitriadis Collection have been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. These may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. Please e-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
