    Description

Magnificent Mint State 'Star' Valentinian Arles Solidus

Valentinian I (AD 364-375). AV solidus (21mm, 4.44 gm, 11h). NGC MS ★ 5/5 - 4/5. Arles, ca. AD 365-366. D N VALENTINI-ANVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valentinian I right, seen from front / RESTITVTOR-REIPVBLICAE, emperor standing facing, head right, labarum in right hand with Christogram on banner and palm on shaft, Victory on globe in left; KONSTAN (TAN ligate) in exergue. RIC IX 1a.1. Depeyrot II, 136, 14/1. Depeyrot, Arles 109, 159. A remarkable example of this extremely rare issue. Perfectly struck on proof-like surfaces. A similar example was sold by Hess-Divo, Auction 324 (23 October 2013), lot 121 (realized approx. $17,950).

The city of Arelatum (Arles) was renamed Constantina in AD 328 in honor of Constantine II. At that time, the mint ceased using mint marks of ARL and began using CONST or derivatives, hence the exergual mark on this issue even though scholars today continue to use the original city name.
