    Description

Unpublished, new Judaea Capta issue type

Vespasian (AD 69-79). AE sestertius (34mm, 23.41 gm, 6h). VF. Lugdunum, ca. AD 72-73. IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS IIII, laureate head of Vespasian right; globe at point of bust / IVDAEA-AVGVST, palm tree in center; Vespasian at left, in military dress, standing right, vertical spear in right hand, parazonium in left, left foot on helmet; captive Judaea at right, seated right on cuirass in attitude of mourning; SC in exergue. RIC -. Hendin -. Lovely green and brown patina with typical light porosity. Small flan adjustment mark near the edge, resulting in inconsequential loss of legend.

This is a truly remarkable coin as it is an entirely new reverse legend in a series that is widely collected and extensively documented. Although the reverse type is well-known, the legend should read IVDAEA CAPTA. What appears to have happened is a merging of the regular Judaea Capta type and legend with part of the legend of a middle bronze ending with AVGVSTI - a common reverse legend on Roman coins in other series. The result is a legend of IVDAEA AVGVST, unpublished in the standard references.

Another specimen of this coin, from the same dies, was in the collection of S. Moussaieff, London, and was published in Numismatic Chronicle 138, 1978, p.18 with note 1, plate 4.11, in the article Judaea Capta Coins by Dan Barag. When the revised RIC II, Part I was published by Ian Carradice and Theodore Buttrey in 2007, that coin was missed, so although known by one other example, it does not appear in the catalog.

An exciting opportunity for Judaean collectors and worthy of spirited bidding.

This coin has been examined and certified by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail ZachB@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
