    Vespasian (AD 69-79). Orichalcum sestertius (24.66 gm).  Rome or Tarraco, AD 70. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG P M T P P P COS II DES III , laureate head of Vespasian right / Oak wreath containing S P Q R ADSERTORI LIBERTATIS PVBLIC in four lines. RIC 411 (Rome). BMCRE --, cf. 781 (COS III, given to Tarraco). Very rare! Dark brown and green patina. Some smoothing in fields, otherwise good very fine.

    RIC gives this rare issue to Rome, while BMC assigns it to the mint of Tarraco, which was reopened by Galba during the Civil War of AD 68-69 and continued in operation for the first few years of Vespasian's reign. The reverse type celebrates the Roman people (notably, not the emperor) as "guardians of public liberty."
