Description

Vespasian. A.D. 69-79. AV aureus (19 mm, 7.31 g, 7 h). 'Judaea Capta' issue. Rome, A.D. 69-70. Diademed head of Vespasian right / IVDAEA in exergue, trophy with weeping personification of Judaea seated to right. RIC 58; Calicó 643; Hendin 758. XF.

The quintessential Roman coin struck to celebrate the crushing victory over the Jews in the First Revolt. This extremely rare and fine aureus of Vespasian was probably distributed as largesse during the emperor's triumphal celebrations in Rome and was used as payment to the troops who fought a grueling war against the guerilla tactics of their skillful Jewish opponents.
