Description

Vespasian. A.D. 69-79. AE sestertius (34 mm, 26.82 g, 6 h). Rome, A.D. 71. Laureate head of Vespasian right / Victory standing right, offering palladium to Vespasian standing left, holding spear. RIC 465; BMC 586; BN 553; NAC 33, 452 (same dies); Cohen 620. VF, brown patina, minor roughness. Fine style, and an historically important coin.

Although the bulk of Vespasian's victory issues capitalize on the defeat of the Jewish rebels during the First Revolt, it has been suggested recently on the basis of associations with RIC 461 that this sestertius may not commemorate this victory at all, but rather that achieved against the Batavian tribal leader Julius Civilis. Civilis was used during the Civil War of A.D. 68-69 to cause trouble for Vitellius and delay his advance to Italy, but soon raised a general revolt in Gaul himself. He rampaged until late A.D. 70, when he was at last defeated by a Roman army accompanied by Domitian.
