Maximinus I (AD 235-238). AR denarius (20mm, 3.35 gm, 11h). NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 235-236. IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximinus I right, seen from behind / SALVS AVGVSTI, Salus enthroned left, feeding serpent rising from altar at feet before from patera in outstretched right hand, left arm resting on throne. RIC IV.II 14.

Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus, known then for his abnormally tall stature and humble upbringing was nicknamed "Thrax" due to his Thracian ancestry. When Severus Alexander was murdered in AD 235, Maximinus was promptly proclaimed emperor by his troops. He was the first non-senatorially backed emperor, so a senate revolt broke out. Five other men were made emperor; thus began the Crisis of the Third Century. Maximinus would ultimately march against these senatorially backed usurpers against him, defeating Gordian I and II. Maximinus' troops murdered him while sieging the Balbinus-Pupienus controlled Aquileia in AD 238. His coinage is notable for its dramatic emphasis on the supposed appearance of Maximinus. These include a pronounced brow, nose, and jaw. Modern historians suspect these symptoms to be that of acromegaly, a genetic disorder resulting in the enlargement of certain body parts.
