Description

Otacilia Severa (AD 244-249). AR antoninianus (25mm, 11h). NGC XF. Rome, ca. AD 146-148. M OTACIL SEVERA AVG, diademed, draped bust of Otacilia Severa right, set upon crescent / CONCORDIA AVGG, Concordia seated left, patera in outstretched right hand, double cornucopia cradled in left arm. RIC IV, 125c (Philip I). Frosty backlight on gunmetal toning.

Wife of Philip I, Marcia Otacilia Severa became empress after the death of Gordian III - many suspecting her hand in his potential murder. Together they had one son, Philip II, who would later co-rule with his father. They are referred to by some historians as the first Christian imperial couple because of their religious tolerance, as well as Otacilia's pardoning of Bishop Babylas of Antioch. However, not much remains on Otacilia after her husband and son's deaths in AD 249.
