    Description

Roman Provincial. Diva Faustina I and M. Galerius Antoninus, son of Antoninus (died before AD 138). Æ 27 mm (8.96 gm) of Cyprus. Probably Rome, for use in Cyprus, after ca. AD 146(?). ΘEA ΦAY-CTEINA, veiled and draped bust of Diva Faustina I right / M . ΓAΛEPIOC ANTONEINOC AYTOKPATOPOC ANTONINOY YIOC, bare-headed and draped bust of M. Galerius Antoninus right. Parks 22. Cohen 2. Extremely rare and one of the finest known specimens. Perfectly centered on a nice round flan. Dark green patina. Good very fine.

    Ex Henry Platt Hall Collection (Glendining's, 16 November 1950), 1509; Levis Collection (Ars Classica XI, 18-20 June 1925), 601; Cantoni Collection (P. & P. Santamaria 5, 29 November 1920), 761.

This coin belongs to a much larger series of Roman imperial and provincial coins struck to commemorate the death and subsequent deification of Faustina I, the much-loved wife of Antoninus Pius. The coin is an important piece because it and an inscription in the Mausoleum of Hadrian (CIL V, 989) are some of the the only surviving evidence for the existence of M. Galerius Antoninus, a son of Antoninus Pius and Faustina I who predeceased his father's elevation to the imperial purple. This coin seems to be the only portrait coin of M. Galerius Antoninus.
