Julius Caesar. 44 B.C. AR denarius (19 mm, 3.65 g). Rome, posthumous issue. M. Mettius, moneyer. Laureate head right; lituus and simpulum behind; c/m: IMP VES within rectangular incuse / Venus standing left, holding Victory and sceptre, shield resting on globe; K in left field. Crawford 480/3; HCRI 100; Sydenham 1056; RSC 34; Howgego 839. Coin near Fine, c/m VF. The countermark was applied ca. A.D. 74-79 at Ephesus, and illustrates the need to re-tariff older coins for continued circulation.Auction Info
