Description
Julius Caesar. 44 B.C. AR denarius (17 mm, 3.92 g, 9 h). Rome. P. Sepullius Macer, moneyer. Laureate head of Julius Caesar right; star of eight rays behind / Venus standing left, holding Victory and sceptre. Cf. Crawford 480/5a (star of six rays); cf. HCRI 106 (same); cf. Sydenham 1071a (same); cf. RSC 41a (same). Near XF, darkly toned, weakly struck and obverse off center. Ex Dr. Samuel Warshauer Collection (Freeman & Sear 8, 5 February 2003), 403.All the cited references list combinations of either the obverse depicting a star of six rays paired with the reverse depicting a plain sceptre, or the obverse depicting a star of eight rays (as on this coin) paired with the reverse depicting the sceptre resting on a star (missing on this coin). It would seem that the present coin is an unrecorded mule of the two varieties.
