Lovely Libertas Issue

Marcus Junius Brutus, as moneyer (54 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.91 gm, 6h). Rome. LIBERTAS, head of Libertas right, hair rolled at brow line, wearing single pendant earring and pearl necklace / The consul Lucius Junius Brutus walking left between two lictors, carrying axes over their shoulders, and preceded by an accensus; BRVTVS in exergue. Crawford 433/1. Sydenham 906. RSC Junia 31. A simply lovely piece, well centered and beautifully toned. NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5.

A decade after the date of issue, Brutus would use the watchword "Libertas," as personified by the female bust on the obverse of this coin type, to signal his fellow-conspirators to launch their deadly attack on Julius Caesar.
