Description

P. Furius Crassipes (84 BC). AR denarius (20mm, 3.83 gm, 7h). Rome. AED CVR, turreted head of Cybele right; behind, deformed foot upwards / Curule chair with P. F[OVRIVS] on seat crossbar, CRASSIPES in exergue. Crawford 356/1c. Sydenham 735b. Furia 19. Sharply struck on a broad flan and lustrous. NGC MS 5/5 - 5/5.

This type was struck by P. Furius Crassipes as a Curule Aedile, rather than the usual "tres vir monetales," apparently to meet some financial emergency. The foot on the obverse is a punning reference to his cognomen, which means "deformed foot" in Latin.
