Description

Mn. Fonteius C.f. (ca. 85 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 4h). NGC XF, brushed. Rome. MN•FONTEI•-C•F (MN and NT ligate), laureate head of Apollo right; thunderbolt below truncation / Winged Cupid seated right on goat; pilei of the Dioscuri above, thyrsus left below; all within wreath. Crawford 353/1c.

Ex AP Numismatics, private sale with old dealer's tag included; Pars Coins, private sale with old dealer's tag included.

The figure on the obverse might also be depicting Vejovis, a more obscure Roman deity who is occasionally misidentified as Apollo. Many connect him to Jupiter, speculating he was a counterpart as hypothesized by his name possibly meaning "anti-Jupiter." His attributes and role are unclear, but he likely came from Etruscan origin and had a temple on Capitoline Hill.
