    Description

Galilaea, Sepphoris (Diocaesarea). Antoninus Pius. 138-161 C.E. AE 23 mm (9.03 g). Laureate head right / Tyche, holding sceptre and cornucopiae, standing within central arch of tetrastyle temple. Rosenberger III p. 61, 8 var. (bust); Meshorer 91 var. (same); SNG ANS 1095-6 (same obverse die as 1095). Good Fine, dark green patina with earthen highlights. Meshorer, p. 36: "Towards the end of Trajan's reign, Sepphoris ceased minting coins, perhaps as a punishment for the city's support of the rebellion of the Jews under Trajan in 115-117/8 C.E., called the 'War of Quietus'. Although this rebellion occurred in the Diaspora, there are some indications that it had supporters, and perhaps even participants, among the Jewish population of this country, though no hard evidence is available. Minting was resumed only under Antoninus Pius, but from then onwards, the coins were of a completely different character and the city was no longer called by its Hebrew name, but by the pagan name of Diocaesarea, in honour of Caesar and Zeus (Dios)."
