    Description

Galilaea, Sepphoris. Trajan. 98-117 C.E. AE 26 mm (16.85 g). Laureate head right / Legend in two lines within wreath. Rosenberger III p. 60, 3; Meshorer 87 (same obverse die); SNG ANS 1086-7 (same obverse die as 1086). Near VF, brown patina with earthen encrustation. According to Meshorer, p. 36, "[After] the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E., many of the Jewish leaders... settled in Sepphoris, and it became the foremost Jewish city in Galilee. Therefore, it is not surprising that all the coins of the city minted during Trajan's reign... bore Jewish symbols on the reverse. A series of four denominations was issued at Sepphoris under Trajan, bearing the following symbols (in order of size): wreath of leaves, palm tree, winged and filleted caduceus and ears of grain, all of them well-known symbols or decorative elements in early Jewish art." This and the following three lots represent a complete denomination set of these coins.
