    Description

    Marcus Aurelius, 161-180 A.D., AE 17 (2.25 g). Diademed, draped female head right/ METAL AVRELIA NIS in three lines within wreath. RIC 1255 (Rarity 2). VF+, brown patina, Very Rare. Most likely a quadrans, this type is known as a "Coin of the Mines". Such small bronzes were issued during the second century to supply small change in mining districts and are highly collectible. This example, the only one known for Aurelius, has a larger flan and is of better style than many.
