    Description

Syria, Decapolis. Charach Moba. Elagabalus. 218-222 C.E. AE 20 mm (5.77 g). Laureate head right / Altar of Dusares approached by steps, on which is a tall column between two baetyls; on right, priest seated left. Spijkerman p. 110, 5, pl. 22, 5 (same dies); Rosenberger IV p. 22, 2 (same obverse die); Meshorer 275 (same dies); SNG ANS -. Near VF, green patina with earthen highlights. Extremely rare! The reverse type has been identified based on a similar coin struck at Bostra which mentions Dusares. At this time, Dusares was identified with the Roman god Bacchus, and it is probable that the inhabitants of Charach Moba, mostly Nabataeans, also revered the god locally. During the Roman period, Charach Moba only struck coins for the short, four-year reign of Elagabalus. Of all the cities of the Transjordan region, Charach Moba's coins are the rarest.
