    Description

Anonymous Issue. 211-210 B.C. AR quinarius minted in Apulia. Head right of Roma wearing Phrygian helmet; behind, "V"/Dioscuri right. 2.35 g. Crawford 102/2b, cf. Sydenham 181. AU50 ICG with lovely grey and blue toning.
The main silver unit of the Roman Republican series was the denarius, worth ten AE asses. On the early issues of denarii, the equivalent "X," or ten, was engraved in the dies behind the head of Roma. The quinarius or half-denarius, formed the middle denomination in the silver series of Republican issues: note the "V" for the equivalent five bronze asses. The smallest silver coin was the silver sestertius, or scrupulum, worth one-quarter denarius. The fractional denominations were issued sporadically in Republican times. During the late 3rd century B.C. in Italy, the relative value of silver to bronze was 1:120.
