    Description

    C. Titinius, moneyer. 141 B.C. AR denarius minted at Rome. Helmeted head right of Roma, "XVI" behind/Victory in biga right. Rare. 4.01 g. Cr. 226/1, Syd. 445, Titinia 7. AU55 ICG, some light scattered porosity, especially on the reverse.
The denarius has now been retariffed at 16 asses, instead of 10 as earlier, hence "XVI" behind the obverse head of Roma; see T. Buttrey's article in ANS Museum Notes 7 (1957). Michael Crawford's corpus Roman Republican Coinage (the Cr. number) is the latest major reference, but Sydenham numbers and Babelon's organization by gens or family name will also be given. This system of classification is based on the moneyer's main family name, followed by a number indicating the chronology within that particular family. Roman Silver Coins, Volume I, published by Seaby, is an easy-to-use and readily available reference which is based on the moneyer's gens. From this point, all Republican, Imperatorial and Imperial coins can be assumed to be struck at Rome unless otherwise indicated. Since most all issues were struck al marco, weights are unnecessary and will be omitted from catalogue entries.

Due completely to Heritage's thoroughly diligent and professional management and promotion of the collection, the faraday Collection stirred national attention among numismatists and the auction results brought a gross value greater than that last estimated by the experienced collector.
