    Description

Constantine I, the Great, A.D. 307-337. AE follis minted as Caesar, A.D. 307, at Lugdunum. Laureate, cuirassed and draped bust right of Constantine I/Genius standing left holding cornucopiae and patera. RIC 220b [as Scarce]. EF45 ICG, even dark brown patina.
Mintmarks on A.D. 4th-5th century bronzes are usually in three divisions, often not separated. The first part is "money [of]," which can be seen as "M" = Moneta, "SM" = Sacra Moneta, or "P" = pecunia or money. The mint abbreviation comes next, in this case "LG" (the "G" is engraved as a "C") = Lugdunum (now Lyon, France). Then the mint workshop or officina is indicated with a Greek or Latin letter or letters, giving us the number of mint workshop or section which struck the coin. While on this follis there is no officina number, there is an issue mark in the field, "T-F," which dates the coin to A.D. 307, probably having been minted in the summer of that year. Many scholars have spent their professional lives putting these issues in chronological order, on the basis of hoard evidence, style, weight/debasement, reverses selected, Imperial honors and historical context.
